Most drivers install a dashcam to capture what happens on the road. But what happens when the vehicle is switched off and the car is left unattended?

In Singapore, many new cars come with dashcams pre-installed by authorised car agents or dealers. While these dashcams may work perfectly well during driving, some are configured to stop recording once the engine is switched off.

This means your car could be left without video surveillance while parked, whether at an HDB multi-storey car park, shopping mall, office or even outside your own home.

A car door hitting your vehicle, a reversing accident or a hit-and-run can happen when nobody is around to witness it.

That's where Dashcam Parking Mode comes in.

What Is Dashcam Parking Mode?

Parking Mode allows your dashcam to continue monitoring your vehicle after the vehicle is switched off.

Depending on the dashcam model and recording settings, it can capture impacts, movements around your vehicle and other incidents that happen while you are away.

Both BlackVue and Vueroid dashcams support Parking Mode, offering different recording features to suit various parking conditions and requirements.

However, there is one important thing to understand: your dashcam still needs power to operate when the vehicle is switched off.

Where Does the Power Come From?

There are two common ways to power your dashcam during parking.

1. Using Your Vehicle's Battery

The dashcam can be hardwired to your vehicle's electrical system, allowing it to draw power from the battery even when the vehicle is switched off.

For electric vehicles (EVs), the dashcam typically draws power from the low-voltage auxiliary battery rather than directly from the main high-voltage battery.

To prevent excessive battery discharge, a suitable hardwiring setup should include low-voltage protection, which automatically cuts off power to the dashcam when the battery voltage drops below a preset level.

While this is a convenient solution, Parking Mode operation consumes energy from your car battery.

For drivers who make frequent short trips or leave their cars parked for long periods, the available recording time may be limited.

In Singapore, many authorised car agents discourage or restrict the use of the vehicle's battery for dashcam Parking Mode, especially for new cars. This is because the additional power consumption may affect battery health and reliability. Depending on the manufacturer's warranty terms, battery-related issues arising from such installations may also affect warranty coverage.

For this reason, drivers who require longer Parking Mode operation may prefer a dedicated dashcam battery instead.

2. Using a Dedicated Cellink Dashcam Battery

An alternative is to install a dedicated dashcam battery, such as the Cellink NEO 80+S or Cellink B8.

The Cellink battery charges while the vehicle is running and supplies power to the dashcam when the engine is switched off.

This allows the dashcam to operate during parking without drawing its parking power directly from the vehicle's starter battery.

A dedicated battery is particularly useful for drivers who want longer Parking Mode operation or prefer to minimise additional strain on their car battery.

The actual recording duration depends on the dashcam's power consumption, recording mode and battery capacity.

How Do You Know If Your Dashcam Is Recording While Parked?

Having a dashcam installed does not necessarily mean Parking Mode is working.

Here are a few simple ways to check.

Check the LED indicator

Most dashcams have LED indicators to show their operating status. After switching off your engine, check whether the dashcam remains powered on.

However, an illuminated LED does not always mean the dashcam is actively recording. Some models may be in standby mode.

Listen for voice guidance

BlackVue dashcams provide voice guidance when switching between Normal Recording and Parking Mode.

For example, you may hear "Parking Mode On" when the dashcam enters Parking Mode.

Check the recorded footage

The most reliable way is to review the recorded files through the dashcam's mobile app or memory card.

Keep in mind that some Parking Mode settings only save recordings when an impact or motion is detected. You may not see continuous recordings throughout the parking period.

Is Your Dashcam Suitable for Extended Parking Mode?

Simply providing continuous power to your existing dashcam does not necessarily mean it is suitable for extended Parking Mode operation.

Think about it. An average driver may spend only one or two hours driving each day. With Parking Mode enabled, the dashcam could be operating for almost 24 hours a day, even when the car is not in use.

That's a significant difference in operating hours.

A dashcam running continuously generates heat, and Singapore's hot and humid weather makes the situation even more challenging, especially when the car is parked outdoors under direct sunlight.

Over time, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can affect the reliability and lifespan of electronic components.

That's why choosing a dashcam designed and proven for extended Parking Mode operation is just as important as choosing the right power source.

A reliable dashcam should be able to manage heat effectively, operate consistently for extended periods and provide suitable temperature protection when conditions become too extreme.

What Parking Mode Features Should You Look For?

Not all dashcams record in the same way when parked.

Some continuously monitor their surroundings, while others focus on impact detection or reducing power consumption.

Understanding these differences will help you choose a dashcam that suits your parking habits.

1. Impact and Motion Detection

This is one of the most commonly used Parking Mode features.

Impact Detection uses the dashcam's built-in G-sensor to detect sudden impacts or vibrations, such as another vehicle reversing into your parked car.

Motion Detection monitors movements within the camera's field of view, such as vehicles or people passing nearby.

When an event is detected, the dashcam saves a recording for later review.

However, there is another important feature worth checking: Buffered Event Recording.

2. Buffered Event Recording – Don't Miss What Happened Before

Imagine returning to your parked car and discovering damage to the bumper.

You check your dashcam footage and find a recording showing another vehicle driving away. Unfortunately, the recording started only after the impact, so you cannot see how the accident happened.

This is where Buffered Event Recording makes a difference.

Instead of starting a recording only when an event is detected, the dashcam continuously maintains a short video buffer.

When an impact or motion triggers an event, the dashcam saves footage from both before and after the incident.

Depending on the model, this could include 10 or 20 seconds of footage before the event, followed by the recording after it.

This allows you to see the sequence leading up to the incident, not just what happened afterwards.

Not all dashcams offer Buffered Event Recording. Some only begin recording after detecting an impact, potentially missing important details.

For parking surveillance, this is one feature we strongly recommend looking out for.

3. Time Lapse Recording

Time Lapse is another useful Parking Mode option, especially for drivers who prefer longer periods of surveillance.

Instead of recording at the normal frame rate, the dashcam captures images at reduced intervals and combines them into a video.

This allows you to review a longer parking period in a shorter video clip while using less storage space than conventional continuous recording.

For example, if your car is parked for several hours, Time Lapse can provide a quick overview of activity around the vehicle without having to go through hours of normal-speed footage.

On supported dashcams, an impact can also trigger a separate event recording.

Time Lapse is particularly useful in busy car parks where frequent movements may otherwise generate many motion-triggered event files.

4. Low Power Mode – Longer Parking Protection

What if you need your dashcam to monitor your car for an extended period without consuming too much power?

This is where Low Power Mode comes in.

Instead of keeping the camera fully operational, the dashcam enters a low-power standby state, significantly reducing electricity consumption.

When an impact is detected, the dashcam wakes up and begins recording.

For example, the Vueroid S1-4K Infinite features Low Power Mode with very low standby power consumption, making it suitable for extended parking protection.

However, there is a trade-off.

While operating in Low Power Mode, Motion Detection and Buffered Event Recording are not available. The dashcam only wakes up and starts recording after detecting an impact.

For drivers who prioritise longer standby time over continuous monitoring, this can be a practical option and user can easily switch it on via the settings.

Vueroid DuraShift – Smart Protection in Singapore's Hot Weather

Anyone who parks outdoors in Singapore knows how hot a car can get under the afternoon sun.

High temperatures are particularly challenging for dashcams because they are usually mounted near the windscreen, where heat can build up quickly.

Most dashcams have built-in temperature protection and may automatically shut down when their internal temperature reaches a certain limit.

While this protects the electronics, it also means Parking Mode surveillance is temporarily interrupted.

Vueroid's DuraShift technology offers a smarter way to manage this situation.

When the dashcam detects that its temperature has reached the switching threshold, DuraShift automatically changes from Motion Detection or Time Lapse Mode to Low Power Mode.

By reducing power consumption and heat generation, the dashcam can cool down while remaining on standby to detect impacts.

Once the temperature returns to a safe operating level, it automatically switches back to Motion Detection or Time Lapse Mode.

The entire process happens automatically, without requiring the driver to change any settings.

How Vueroid Durashift works

This is particularly useful in Singapore, where a vehicle parked outdoors can be exposed to high temperatures for several hours.

Although Motion Detection and Buffered Recording are temporarily unavailable during Low Power Mode, impact detection remains active, providing a level of protection that would otherwise be lost during a complete thermal shutdown.

DuraShift is available on supported Vueroid models.

Which Parking Mode Setup Is Right for You?

There is no single Parking Mode configuration that suits every driver.

If you park mainly in sheltered car parks and drive regularly, a hardwired dashcam with Impact and Motion Detection may be sufficient.

If you frequently park outdoors, temperature management becomes an important consideration.

For drivers who leave their vehicles parked for extended periods, Low Power Mode can help conserve energy and extend standby time.

And if you prefer longer parking surveillance without relying directly on your car's starter battery, a dedicated Cellink dashcam battery is worth considering.

It is also important to look beyond video resolution when choosing a dashcam. Features such as Buffered Event Recording, power management and temperature protection can make a significant difference when an actual incident occurs.
